Find anything, locally...even missing kids! aka Risks of Digital Ad placement

Yesterday as I drove into work, I noticed one of those electronic billboards.  It featured an Amber Alert about a missing 17-year old girl who was apparently forced into a car and abducted.  As I read the details on the sign, the sign switched to one fo the other ads it was programmed to display.  This one said "YP.com:  Find Anything...Locally..."  Fortunately, later yesterday the girl was found.  Whew!  That was quite nearly a digital ad placement disaster...

Much like ad placement in any other traditional medium, you never know what other ads yours will be running alongside.  Digital Media also has far fewer inhibitions than traditional media, potentially increasing the risks associated with ad placement.  A little bit of forethought and due diligence on the part of the buyers could have averted the potential disaster of being associated with a missing person found in less than "alive and well" condition.  Fortunately this story has a happy ending for both the missing girl, and YP.com.

Business Insider did a brilliant list highlighting some hilariously unfortunate ad placements.  It's worth checking out.
